Portsmouth Naval Shipyard - Building 92
Kittery, ME
LEED Silver Certification targeted
As a part of an overall Energy Project, McHenry Architecture was charged with improving the building envelope of Building 92 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, ME, in keeping with the energy goals of the Shipyard, the US Navy, and Federal energy mandates. Building 92 boasts a WWII-era addition with 30,000 square feet of corrugated wire glass windows, and is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
A careful balance was struck between the historic features and sustainability, with the introduction of a modern polycarbonate panel that emulates the corrugation of the original glass, but improves the energy efficiency by 483%. The existing structure will be restored, and the new window framing system will preserve the rhythm of the historic windows, allowing B92 to maintain its eligibility for the NRHP, and still meet the project’s energy goals.
