A HISTORIC RENOVATION AND A CONTEMPORARY LANDMARK
Built in 1884, the Fermentation Building is a signature property on the site of the historic Frank Jones Brewery complex that sits just outside downtown Portsmouth. Currently vacant and not improved upon in over two decades, city residents and officials will be excited to learn that the Fermentation Building will be renovated in the coming year. Plans for the redevelopment show the creation of a “new” building and landmark property of architectural significance on the Seacoast, artfully juxtaposing contemporary, cutting-edge design elements within the context of the building’s historic shell. After redevelopment of the shell, 3S will build out the first floor interior to our specifications and become the anchor tenant, occupying approximately 10,000 square feet, the entire ground floor of the building.
BUILDING COMMUNITY IS IN OUR ARCHITECTURE
The creation of a vital community gathering space is at the heart of our mission, and the interior design and build-out of the 3S space will be developed around this principle. Each of the three spaces will be linked to one another, not just in a business sense, but physically, so that a visitor to any one of the spaces will feel a sense of connection to the other two. The 3S space will be at once contemporary and warm, with simplicity in its aesthetics that will embrace visitors of all ages and tastes.
HELPING TO FULFILL PORTSMOUTH’S MASTER PLAN:
The renovation and branding of the entire Fermentation Building as an arts and cultural center, filled with cultural organizations and creative businesses, will transform it into a core building within Portsmouth’s Islington Street Arts Corridor, as described in the city’s Master Plan. This signature property will create a center of gravity all its own—significantly redefining this budding neighborhood—and have a deep and continuing impact in the expansion of the downtown business district along Islington Street.
